Kensington Palace: Inside Kate and William’s stunning 20 room apartment in London

Princess Margaret decorated Kensington Palace says expert

Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace is set in Kensington Gardens, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is a stone’s throw from Hyde Park and just minutes from other royal residences including Buckingham Palace. What does it look like inside?

Kensington Palace History

The royal palace was purchased by King William and Queen Mary in 1689 who chose Kensington Palace to be their country retreat.

Over the years, various different monarchs have transformed it into the stunning property it is today.

Queen Caroline shaped the palace and gardens, while Queen Victoria spent her childhood there.

It has also been home to Princess Diana, Princess Margaret and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Will and Kate’s residence today

It is the official residence of Kate and William along with their three children.

They live in apartment 1A, although it is said to contain 20 rooms split over four levels.

Photos taken inside the home show grand, intricately carved ceilings and ornate carpets.

Images of Prince William’s home office show a contemporary chest of drawers along with a chestnut desk.

The room also has a large fireplace with a mirror hanging above it.

Meanwhile, Kate’s office has a large wooden desk, with a striped chair and stacks of books on her desk.

President and Michelle Obama visit Kensington Palace

The Duke and Duchess shared a glimpse into their London residency when they hosted Michelle and Barack Obama back in 2016.

The couple hosted the former US president in the drawing room of their home.

The room has a neutral cream and gold colour scheme with several lamps dotted around the room.

There is also ornate furniture with multiple armchairs around the room too.

The drawing room has been made homely with faux flowers and floral cushions on the cream sofa.

Beautiful ornaments and candles are on display, while traditional artwork is hung in gold frames on the walls.

Another photo of the room also showed young Prince George sitting on a rocking horse that had been bought for the royal by Barack Obama.

The snap showed the room had large windows complete with embroidered floor-length curtains.

Neutral toned carpet ran throughout the room which also had window seats complete with small cushions.

The royal palace also has stunning gardens.

It is just one of eight royal parks and covers an area of 265 acres.

Images from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement back in 2017 gave a glimpse into the palace’s gardens.

The Sunken Garden, which has soft landscape features, was first designed back in 1908.

In 2017, the garden was re-planted with white flowers for visitors to reflect and celebrate the life of Princess Diana.
