King Charles III met President Mohamed Irfaan Ali at State House in Georgetown and attended a garden reception with members of Parliament and local British residents on Thursday evening, the official Court Circular confirms. The engagements followed the King’s arrival in Guyana for a two-day state visit and a Guard of Honour at Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Update, October 29 at 9:12 p.m. Eastern: A new official Palace carousel shows President Ali receiving the King with his family before the State Reception. The Royal Family said the gathering brought together representatives from across Guyanese society and featured Guyanese rum as part of the 60th-anniversary commemorations. The post did not include a speech or new policy statement.
Update, October 30 at 12:38 a.m. Eastern: A firsthand PA report published by ITV adds that Charles sampled a limited-edition Guyanese rum called “Royal Welcome” during the State House cultural evening and called it “very good.” Guests included Guyana-born musician Eddy Grant and former justice secretary David Lammy, whose parents were from Guyana. The report adds color and named attendees, but no new speech, policy announcement, apology or reparations position.
The airport ceremony marked Charles’s first visit to Guyana in 26 years and his first as King. The visit comes as Guyana and the United Kingdom mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, with climate resilience, Indigenous leadership, trade and the legacy of slavery all forming part of the wider conversation.
What happened when King Charles arrived in Guyana?
PA reported that President Ali received the King after his flight from The Bahamas. British High Commissioner Joseph Fisher and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband were also among those present. The King then inspected the military Guard of Honour at the airport.
The Royal Family confirmed the arrival in a short public Reel with the caption, “The King has arrived in Guyana at the start of his two-day visit.” The official post did not display a photographer or separate reuse license when we checked it, so we are linking and embedding the original rather than republishing its footage.

Why this visit matters
Guyana is the only former British colony on the South American mainland. Its forests cover more than 85 percent of the country, and Charles has supported its conservation work for decades. He became patron of the Iwokrama International Centre in 2000 and renewed that patronage in 2024, according to Guyana’s Department of Public Information.
The visit also arrives amid renewed calls for Britain to apologize for its role in the transatlantic slave trade and to engage with reparatory justice. President Ali told ITV News that Charles’s acknowledgment of slavery as one of history’s darkest chapters was important, but that a formal apology should be the next step. Buckingham Palace has maintained that apologies and reparations are matters for governments.
The Court Circular records no speech, policy announcement or change in the Palace’s position on apologies and reparations at Thursday’s State House engagements. The official record confirms the meeting and reception, but does not provide substantive details of the King’s conversation with President Ali.
What comes next for the King?
The Royal Household says the King’s Guyana program will highlight environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. He is also expected to meet Indigenous leaders, young environmental advocates, veterans and members of the business community.
Among the scheduled stops are the Georgetown memorial known as Rabbit Walk, Umana Yana, the Georgetown Botanical Gardens and the Georgetown Seawall. After Guyana, Charles will travel to Antigua and Barbuda, where Queen Camilla will join him for the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
